The Towel Predicament: Or, How Many is Too Many?

Some folks, I tell you, they hoard Towels like a squirrel stashing nuts for the winter. Every Guest Room stocked to the gills, every nook and cranny overflowing with terrycloth. Why, they’ve got enough Towels to outfit a Turkish Bath!

Then you’ve got your minimalist types, the ones who believe one Towel can and should serve every purpose, from drying dishes to scrubbing the back. They’ll tell you it builds character, but let’s be honest, a fellow likes to have a dry spot to park himself after a bath, doesn’t he?

So, what’s the happy medium? Well, common sense dictates that a fellow needs a fresh Towel every time he steps out of the bath, wouldn’t you say? And it wouldn’t hurt to have a spare set or two on hand for Guests, unexpected Spills, or in case the Laundry gets backed up.

Now, some of those Home Economics Mags, they’ll try to tell you that two sets of Towels per person is the magic number. One set in use, one set in the wash. Seems reasonable enough, but what about those of us who like to live a little? What about the impromptu dip in the lake, the unexpected visit from the In-Laws?

The truth is, Friend, there’s no hard and fast rule when it comes to Towels. It’s a personal matter, much like your choice of Necktie or your preference in Cocktail Hour beverages. Just remember, a well-stocked linen closet is a thing of beauty, but there’s no need to go overboard. Unless, of course, you’re planning on opening your own Turkish Bath. Then, by all means, let the Towels pile up!
