A Discerning Shopper’s Guide to Duvet Cover Conundrums

The average individual, faced with the task of encasing a puffy duvet insert within its cover, might be forgiven for thinking they’ve been tasked with wrestling a bear into a burlap sack. It’s a struggle as old as time itself (or at least as old as the invention of the duvet cover), but fear not, dear reader! With a bit of know-how and a dash of good humor, you too can master this most confounding of domestic challenges.

While the sources we found on the subject don’t delve into specific tips and tricks for wrestling a duvet cover onto its insert, they do offer some helpful clues. The most important takeaway is the emphasis on securing the corners. A duvet cover, you see, is essentially a giant pillowcase, and just as a pillow has a tendency to go rogue within a loosely fitted case, so too will a duvet insert shift and bunch within a cover that lacks proper anchoring.

Some other sources on the Internet provide step-by-step instructions for putting on a duvet cover using two different methods: the traditional method and the rolling method. Both methods emphasize the importance of matching the corners of the duvet cover to the corners of the duvet insert. The traditional method suggests gripping the top two corners of the cover and the duvet insert in each hand before flipping the cover right side out. The rolling method suggests tying the corners of the duvet cover to the corner tags of the duvet insert, if your bedding has them, before rolling the duvet and insert together.

Yet other expert sources suggest that duvet “drift” or sliding happens when the corners aren’t properly secured inside the cover. This assumes that taking the time to properly secure the corners is well worth the effort.

These repeated mentions by those in the know of securing corners suggest that this is indeed a crucial step in achieving a smooth and successful duvet cover application.
